Each year the State Young Farmers Committee, along with the Young Farmers Division, sponsors the Outstanding Young Farm Family program in order to recognize young farm families and farmers between the ages of 17 and 35 who are doing an outstanding job in their farm, home and commodity activities, and to promote a better understanding of agriculture with the urban populace. Alfa Farmers and county commodity divisions also assist in the selection and honoring of the young farmers and farm families on the county level.
Awards
Each county Farmers Federation may nominate one outstanding young farmer or farm family in each of the following commodity areas: bee & honey, beef, catfish, cotton, dairy, forestry, greenhouse nursery & sod, hay & forage, horticulture, peanut, pork, poultry, sheep & goat, soybean, wheat & feed grain, and wildlife resources. Fifteen state commodity winners will be selected at the Alabama Young Farmers Leadership Conference. Each commodity winner will receive a plaque and a $200 cash award. From the 16 commodity divisions, six finalists will be selected. An overall winner will be chosen from these six and announced at the Alfa Farmers Federation Annual Meeting. An overall state winner is not eligible to compete again. (Employees of the Alabama Farmers Federation, Alfa and affiliated companies, and their children are not eligible.)
