Discussion Meet
What is a Discussion Meet?
Think of it as a panel discussion with a few of your fellow agriculturalists discussing the most pressing agricultural issues of our time. During the Discussion Meet competition, participants will be given a topic or agricultural issue to discuss. Each will make brief opening comments before engaging in a panel discussion that will last 30 minutes. Throughout the process, judges will evaluate each contestant on his or her ability to facilitate cooperation, accept and give constructive criticism, promote problem solving, and enhance communication. The Young Farmers Discussion Meet helps participants build basic discussion skills, develop a keen understanding of important agricultural issues and explore how groups can pool knowledge to reach a consensus to solve problems. Although public speaking and debate skills are both useful, this event rewards logical thinking and diplomacy as much as it does eloquence and persuasion.

What are the prizes? The winner of the Discussion Meet contest will receive $500 from Dodge and a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation, plus an expense-paid trip to the National Finals held during the American Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting in January, 2010. Prizes will be awarded to the first runner-up as well.
When will it be held? The Young Farmers Discussion Meet preliminaries will be held July 24 in Montgomery at the Young Farmers summer Conference. The final 4 will compete at the Annual Meeting of the Alabama Farmers Federation, Dec. 5 in Mobile, Alabama.
